Ajit Pai, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, has officially announced he’ll be stepping down from his position on January 20th, Inauguration Day.
Pai is known for repealing net neutrality back in 2017. This allowed ISPs to block and throttle internet traffic or even charge clients different prices. This also granted ISPs the ability to structure their speeds according to different price tiers.
The Senate Commerce Committee is expected to vote on the nomination of Nathan Simington on Dec. 2. If the committee endorses Simington, he will go on to the Senate to be officially confirmed. Though, this unlikely due to Pai announcing his intention to resign.
With President-elect Joe Biden on the cusps of being ushered in, he is widely expected to be considering Jessica Rosenworcel as a potential nominee for Chairman’s position. Rosenworcel formerly served as Chairman of the FCC from May 11th, 2012 until January 3rd, 2017, under the Obama administration. She was a known champion of net neutrality laws.
